OPENS: After 146 years, the circus is a failure.
Pennywise the Dancing Clown had finally found a home. It took him 15 billion years of existence to find one, but here it was – among the freaks and losers.
Where would the clown go?
He remembered a cute little town called Derry that the circus train once drove through. The residents die or disappear at six times the national average. That seemed like a good fit.
Maine would be a nice place to grab a bite to eat and sleep for the next 27-30 years.
In his heart, he was really hoping to find another family of freaks and losers. But, he was never good at making friends. He practiced on a young boy,
“I’m Pennywise, the dancing clown. “Pennywise?”. “Yes?”, “Meet Georgie”. “Georgie, meet Pennywise”.
Unfortunately, he didn’t make a new friend.
He offered good wishes to some other children, “I will have my long rest and you will all live to grow and thrive and lead *happy* lives until old age takes you back to the weeds.”
But he was told to leave.
Pennywise tried to bring the joy of Barnum & Bailey to the children of Derry. “Can you smell the circus? There’s peanuts… cotton candy… hot dogs…” He even tried to give them a red balloon.
He offered real estate advice,
“Where you going, Eds? If you lived here you’d be home by now! Come join the clown, Eds. You’ll float down here. We all float down here. Yes, we do!”
Nothing worked. He would never make friends again. There was only one place for a freak like him, the quarry.
Much to his surprise, the children came to visit. He knew he had found his new home when they screamed,
“Welcome to the Loser’s Club A-hole!”
